The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it every time we wipe our ass or start a car.
The problem is when we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget we’re on autopilot. Because when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them they control us.
The problem is that when we take this autopilot approach, we forget to actually be aware of anything that we are doing. We forget that we can stop our habitual behaviors before they start. We forget that we can step over our habitual responses and start to think for ourselves. We forget that we can set boundaries to keep ourselves from being hurt.
In fact, we are so in control of our thoughts and reactions that we forget that we do control them. It is like we are in a time loop that we still don’t remember the name of. When I was a kid, I used to be a pretty good listener. After my grandmother died at the age of thirty years, I used to listen in on her phone calls. I didn’t have to take her calls. I can be pretty calm when I’m away from my friends. But when I’m away from my friends, I don’t think it’s a big deal.
I guess it goes to show that the more you think you are on autopilot, the more you are actually on autopilot. I know I am on autopilot. I have been for a while, but I’ve been on autopilot for a really long time now. I think my personality is so good that I can say, “I am doing something.” But that doesnt mean I dont have a personality.

I think that is precisely what a person with a personality is: someone who doesn’t know what is going on in their life and yet can still have a personality. They live in a world, their whole life, where they can do whatever they want and get away with it. They can get drunk without anyone noticing and still say, “I have a personality.” But they don’t. They think that they are on autopilot.
I think that the only thing that really makes a person on autopilot is the fact that they are so consumed with having fun that they don’t realize how much of it is actually happening.
The only way we know that we are on autopilot is when we ask ourselves, what am I doing? What am I thinking? What am I doing? If we ask ourselves if we are on autopilot, we will probably say yes because we are so consumed with our selves that we cannot see our lives outside of them.
